Walking the Halls, Grateful for Our Community
As December unfolds and winter break approaches, I find myself especially reflective as I walk the halls of the J. Turner Hood School. There is a distinct feeling you get in a school when things are going well—not because everything is perfect, but because the people inside the building are deeply committed to one another and to the work of teaching and learning. That feeling is present every day at Hood, and it is something I do not take for granted.
In classrooms across the building, I continue to see thoughtful, engaging instruction paired with strong relationships. Our students are curious, kind, and eager to learn. Our teachers and staff consistently go above and beyond to meet students where they are—academically, socially, and emotionally—while holding high expectations rooted in our shared mission: helping everyone grow into safe, responsible, and respectful members of our community.
This season has offered many moments that reflect who we are as a school.
Our STEAM Night was a wonderful example of learning coming alive beyond the school day. Families explored hands-on activities together, students proudly shared their thinking, and former Hood students returned as high school volunteers—reminding us that the sense of belonging built here lasts well beyond elementary school.
The Fun Run, supported by the Hood School Parents’ Association, brought joy, energy, and togetherness to our campus. It was more than a fundraiser; it was a celebration of community, teamwork, and school spirit.
Our student performances continue to be points of pride. The Veterans Day program was meaningful and respectful, honoring those who have served while giving students an opportunity to understand the importance of gratitude and service. The winter concert showcased the confidence, talent, and growth of our students, made possible by dedicated instruction and countless hours of preparation.
Events like the Book Fair, Toys for Tots, and the Holiday Take-a-Tag program remind me how generous this community is. These efforts reflect a shared belief that caring for others and fostering a love of learning are inseparable parts of a strong school culture.
Behind all of this work is a network of families, staff members, and community partners who communicate, collaborate, and support one another—even when challenges arise. From attention to student attendance and safety, to thoughtful planning for incoming kindergarten families, to the daily presence of our local police officers who help ensure a safe and welcoming environment, the systems around our students are strong because people are invested.
As we near the end of 2025, I am grateful—for the conversations in hallways, the laughter in classrooms, the problem-solving in meetings, and the trust shared between school and home. These moments, both big and small, are what make J. Turner Hood School such a special place to learn and grow.
Thank you for being part of this remarkable community. I wish everyone a safe, restful, and joyful winter break, and I look forward to all that the new year will bring.
Warm regards,
Dr. Glen McKay
