Welcome to Inside the Hood, a new platform designed to offer a more personal and reflective view into life at the J. Turner Hood Elementary School.

While official school news will continue to be posted and shared through the School News section of our website, this space will serve a different — and complementary — purpose. Here, you’ll find a glimpse into the lived experiences that shape our days at the Hood: stories from around the schoolyard, updates related to my professional practice, and reflections from the principal’s lens.

After stepping away from my former blog and X (Twitter) account, this newsletter is meant to simplify communication while building a stronger connection between school and home. I hope you’ll follow along as we continue growing our vibrant school community — together.

Murphy brings a calm and joyful presence to our school. School-Based Morale Team Events  Glen McKay, Hood School Principal Did you know that teacher morale has emerged as a critical factor influencing both staff retention and student outcomes? Research consistently shows that supportive school environments—characterized by strong collegial relationships and recognition of staff efforts—contribute to higher levels of job satisfaction and professional engagement (Dinham & Scott, 2000; Johnson, Kraft, & Papay, 2012). One strategy noted in the literature for fostering such environments is the implementation of school-based morale teams. School-based morale teams are small, collaborative groups within a school, typically composed of teachers, administrators, and support staff, whose primary purpose is to promote positive school culture and enhance staff wellbeing.
