We Take Science and Traditions Seriously at J. Turner Hood Elementary
Dr. Glen McKay, Hood School Principal
For eight years, the J. Turner Hood Elementary School community has come together each fall to celebrate creativity, curiosity, and collaboration through its beloved STEAM Night. This year’s event was held on November 5, 2025.
What began as a professional practice and school community-building goal has grown into one of the school’s most exciting annual traditions — a hands-on celebration of science, technology, engineering, art, and math that unites students, staff, families, and even alumni. Who would have thought that eight years ago, we would continue Mrs. Cleary’s passion project with such success? Mrs. Cleary, a beloved fifth-grade teacher, our science leader, and resident scientist, has dedicated countless hours to organizing and running this time-honored event. Her efforts truly make STEAM Night possible.
This year’s event was one of the most dynamic yet. Hallways were buzzing with energy as teachers and the larger school community showcased new activities alongside time-honored favorites. Highlights included student-created marble runs, cup-stacking races, the introduction of augmented reality coloring apps, and an interactive Mars Rover mapping challenge.
Ivy, a current fifth-grade student, exuded excitement as she described her favorites from last year, including working with building materials and the fantastic friends’ portrait station with overlays.
Mrs. Liekweg noted, “I love being involved in STEAM Night each year. We are thrilled that this year features an increased number of stations and opportunities for fun and exploration.”
The event directly supports Hood’s focus on student and family engagement as well as our passion for science. These goals closely align with the district’s emphasis on developing 21st-century skills and deepening engagement in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. That connection to learning is already showing measurable results; Hood’s accountability data traditionally reflects this success.
The showcase also demonstrated the power of community partnership — a testament to Mrs. Cleary’s original intent. Many staff volunteers and high school helpers, including several Hood alumni, supported students and families throughout the event. The Parent Association generously funded materials and supplies, ensuring that every child had access to the same opportunities to explore and innovate. Our families also contributed various items, including a truckload of donations that enhanced the event even further.
As the Hood community reflected on the Eighth Annual STEAM Showcase, the event stands as a proud reminder of what makes the school special: a shared commitment to curiosity, creativity, and tradition. Families and community members were invited to join the celebration and see firsthand how science and tradition come together at J. Turner Hood Elementary School — proving once again that at Hood, we take science (and traditions) seriously.
